Some seem to start at COM3 or COM5, while some start at COM1 or COM2 (it may have to do with phantom serial ports in the BIOS - ie. The only thing that seems to vary is WHICH COM port it assigns to the device. The USB to serial port adapters still create a COM port that the system views as a 'normal' RS-232 port. If you plan to install this on more than one machine each will need to be configured as each will likely have slightly different LPT and Com port assignments so still more reason for a text file. To cover yourself, don't hard code the port in your program, read it from a text file, that way if you need to you can edit the file in Notepad without the need to revisit the code. Control Panel / Device Manager will tell you what serial ports are already assigned. To your question, just pick an unused port on the serial port #. ![]() I got one from Cables to Go and it had serious issues with changing states on some of the 'non data' pins on the RS232 side. First do not buy the cheapest USBus to RS232 cable. ![]()
